Research on Jointed Goatgrass In Wyoming

Dr. Steve Miller

"We have 35,000-40,000 acres in eastern Wyoming infested with jointed goatgrass," according to Dr. Steve Miller, weed scientist at the University of Wyoming in Laramie.  "With a soil seed life of 4-5 years or more for jointed goatgrass in this region, we have a real problem."

Miller is currently conducting research on the Clearfield Production System for wheat.  This technology allows the use of Beyond herbicide with Clearfield wheat.  Beyond selectively controls jointed goatgrass, cereal rye, and downy brome in Clearfield wheat.  Control of jointed goatgrass using the Clearfield system is in the 95-98% range.  Varieties of locally adapted Clearfield wheat will be available to Wyoming producers in three to four years, from the University of Nebraska and Kansas State University wheat breeding programs.

This project is currently being funded by the National Jointed Goatgrass Research Program.  To find out more about the research conducted by Dr. Steve Miller please contact him at sdmiller@uwyo.edu or contact Doug Schmale, JGG Extension Coordinator.
