Grass Weeds In Wheat

Chemical Control

1Selective chemical control of jointed goatgrass in conventional winter wheat is not yet available to growers.
Herbicides providing selective jointed goatgrass control in conventional winter wheat are not yet available.  The genetic similarities and similar life cycles between wheat and jointed goatgrass have made selective herbicide development very difficult.  However, BASF has been developing the Clearfield® Production System for wheat.  See below to find out more about this program.

2.  Clearfield® wheat system.
The Clearfield® system offers growers the first opportunity for selective control of jointed goatgrass in herbicide-resistant winter wheat.  It combines locally adapted varieties with the imidazolinone herbicide resistance trait.  The technology is NOT considered to be genetically modified (GM) and can be processed the same as conventional wheat varieties.  Beyond™ herbicide (imazamox) received registration from the EPA in December 2001 and was available for use on Clearfield® wheat in Fall 2002.  New varieties will be released in the Central Great Plains and other wheat producing regions within the next few years.  Please check out the following information sheets directly from BASF:

3.  Chemical control in broadleaf crops.
Several herbicides are available for selective jointed goatgrass control in crops other than wheat.  Please consult your local chemical retail center or agronomist for specific recommendations for your crop and area.
